RISE to the Challenge

At RISE (Reaching Independence through Support and Education), hope isn't simply a feeling—it's a skill that can be strengthened. Research on the Science of Hope shows that hope grows when people have meaningful goals, identify multiple pathways to reach those goals, and believe in their own ability to take the next step. While barriers may change the journey, hope helps people keep moving forward.
This science is woven into everything we do.
Our coaches partner with members to identify goals that matter to them, explore new pathways when obstacles arise, and celebrate every step of progress along the way. We don't believe people are defined by their circumstances. We believe they possess incredible strength, resilience, and bravery. Sometimes they simply need someone to remind them.
Every day, our members teach us what hope looks like in action.
One member, after navigating her own recovery journey, earned her Peer Support Certification. Rather than allowing her past to define her, she transformed it into purpose. Today, she facilitates bi-weekly recovery processing groups at the Fairbanks Community Hub, walking alongside others as they navigate their own paths toward healing. Her story reminds us that hope has a ripple effect—when one person discovers their strength, they often become a source of strength for others.
Another member experienced every parent's unimaginable heartbreak when she lost her baby shortly after delivery. In the midst of her grief, she chose to celebrate her daughter's life and invited our staff to stand beside her in that sacred moment. It continues to serve as a reminder that resilience is not the absence of pain—it is the courage to keep loving, keep remembering, and keep moving forward even when life feels impossibly heavy.
These members show us all that there is light even in our darkest moments. When challenges feel overwhelming, we remember that hope is not pretending everything is okay. Hope is believing there is still a path forward, even when we cannot yet see the whole journey.
These are not extraordinary stories because they are rare. They are extraordinary because they happen every day. Hope shows up in individuals finding stable employment, neighbors supporting one another, volunteers giving their time, and community partners collaborating. It is found in every person who chooses to take one more step.
This is the first in a series of stories highlighting Hope in Action—real examples of resilience, growth, and community. Our hope is that these stories inspire you as much as they inspire us.
Because hope grows when it is shared.
When a community believes in the potential of its neighbors, celebrates progress, and walks alongside one another through life's challenges, hope becomes contagious. Together, we can create pathways for more individuals and families to move from crisis to contribution.
We invite you to follow along as we share stories of hope each week. We challenge you to share these posts with your network and become part of a community that believes hope is stronger when we build it together. Meghan Storey - Director of RISE Fairbanks
